Patuxai Victory Monument
Vientiane, Laos
Photographer: Morgan Whitney

Besides the beauty in the architecture of this gateway to the city, I am intrigued by all the symbolism of the monument. Dedicated to the Lao people who were killed while fighting for the country’s independence against France, there are many Buddhist references, such as the five Buddhist principles (thoughtful amiability, flexibility, honesty, honor and prosperity) represented by the five towers, resembling a crown, at the top of the arch.
